OK so the ICOM responds to ping but nothing else — this strongly points to a firmware issue on the clone ICOM Next. The unit is alive on the network but there's no working software running on it.
Here's what you need to do:
Reflash the ICOM Next Clone Firmware
You'll need:
- A USB stick (FAT32 formatted)
- The correct ICOM Next firmware file
- A paperclip or pin for the reset button
Step 1 — Get the firmware
For clone ICOM Next units, the most commonly working firmware versions are:
- 1.40.x
- 1.51.x
- 2.xx (some clones don't support this)
Do you know which chip/board is inside your clone? There are mainly two types:
- Qualcomm based (newer clones)
- Freescale/NXP based (older clones)
The wrong firmware on the wrong hardware will brick it, so this is important.
Step 2 — USB Recovery
- Copy the firmware .bin file to the root of the USB stick
- Power off the ICOM
- Insert the USB stick into the ICOM
- Hold the reset button (small pinhole on the back)
- While holding reset, power on the ICOM
- Keep holding for about 10-15 seconds
- The SYSTEM LED should start blinking — this means it's flashing
- Wait until it reboots on its own (can take 3-5 minutes)
- Do NOT unplug power during this process
Step 3 — After reflash
Once it reboots, try the web interface again at http://169.254.92.38 or re-scan with arp -a as the IP might change after reflash.
Important questions:
- Can you open the ICOM case and take a photo of the board? This will help identify which firmware you need.
- Where did you buy it? (AliExpress, eBay, etc.)
- Does it have a USB port on it?
Without the correct firmware, ISTA will never see it. The ping response just means the network chip is alive, but the ICOM application layer is either missing or corrupted.
