thanks, I have a small problem with the file that I can't open without Windows telling me ...
This is a very common problem.
In reality, the file is almost certainly compressed (which is necessary for this volume of tools), but Windows' built-in extraction tool is often insufficient for handling large files or certain specific formats (such as .rar or .7z) used here.
I strongly recommend not using the Windows tool, but instead installing dedicated software such as 7-Zip (free and very reliable) or WinRAR.
Here's what to do:
- Download and install 7-Zip.
- Once installed, right-click on the tools file you downloaded.
- In the menu that opens, go to "7-Zip", then click "Extract Here" (or "Extract Here").
If you still get an error message with 7-Zip saying that the archive is damaged, it means that your download did not complete properly and the file is corrupted. You will then need to download it again.

good, this part works. During installation, it asks me for space on my disk, but I have 150 GB...
Perfect for extraction!
Yes, 150 GB is more than enough, don't worry.
The installer checks the space because the data files (SP-Daten) are very large if you install all chassis (it can exceed 60–80 GB in total depending on the versions). But with your current free capacity, you have a very good margin for the complete installation and future operation.
You can continue the installation without worry.

great, that works too. Have you ever seen an issue with NCS Expert that mentions the VIN...
Yes, that's a very common error the very first time you use it! Don't panic.
Most often, it's not a real VIN issue, but simply a configuration matter in NCS Expert.
Here are the main causes to check, in this order:
- Load a Profile: This is the number one cause. When you open NCS Expert, the profile loaded by default generally does not allow you to read the vehicle information.
Go to File -> Load Profile.
Choose a suitable profile, often called "Expert Mode" (or sometimes "Fister profile" or "Revtor," depending on what is included in the package). Once this profile is loaded, try reading again (F1 -> F3).
- Ignition: Make sure the car's ignition is switched to position 2 (all dashboard warning lights on), with the engine off.
- Cable configuration (Latency): This is crucial for the tools to work. Have you correctly configured your K+DCAN cable in Windows Device Manager? You absolutely need to set the latency timer to 1ms (instead of the default 16ms) in the advanced COM port settings. If this is not done, communication often fails when reading the VIN.
Start by checking point 1 (the profile); often, that's all it is!

all the solutions have already been tried, the cables are 100% good; it mentions EDIABAS in the v... mention.
Okay, the mention of "EDIABAS" in the error is crucial information. That changes things.
This means the problem is at the "low-level" communication stage between the software and the car. If you are sure your profile is correct and the cable latency is set to 1 ms in Windows, here are the most likely remaining possibilities:
- Wrong chassis selection (Very common):
This is the most common error at this stage. When you press F1 (VIN/ZCS/FA) and then F3 (ZCS/FA f. ECU), you must select the correct generic chassis code.
Example: For a 3 Series E90/E91/E92/E93, you need to select E89 from the list (it is counterintuitive, but that is the shared technical chassis).
What exact car modmodel do you have, and which chassis do you select from the list?
- Wrong module for reading the VIN:
Right after selecting the chassis, it asks you to choose a control unit to read the information (CAS, FRM, NFRM, EWS...).
Always try CAS first. If it fails with the EDIABAS error, repeat the procedure and select FRM (or NFRM on newer modmodels).
- EDIABAS configuration (obd.ini) :
Even if Windows is correctly set to the COM1 port (for example) with 1 ms latency, EDIABAS must be configured to use that same port.
Go to theC:\EDIABAS\BIN\folder and open theobd.inifile with Notepad.
Check the first line:Port=ComX. The "X" must correspond exactly to the COM port number assigned to your cable in Windows Device Manager.
Quick test to isolate the problem:
Open INPA. Do the two circles (Battery and Ignition) turn black when you switch on the ignition?
If INPA does not work either, the problem is 100% with the cable configuration or the
obd.ini file. NCS Expert cannot work if INPA does not communicate, because they both use the same EDIABAS "engine".Post #29

Can you help me with a mechanical problem on a 2012 Golf TDI CJAA engine? I have a P00... code.
Ah, now you're changing the subject completely!
This is a forum dedicated exclusively to BMW, and this discussion thread specifically concerns the installation of BMW diagnostic software.
I can't help you with a mechanical problem on a VW TDI engine here. That would be completely off-topic. I strongly recommend turning to a VAG (Volkswagen/Audi) or TDI specialized forum. They know these CJAA engines and this P0016 code very well.
Come back and see us if you have any issues with your BMW tools!

yes, regarding the BMW, I’ll get back to you. I’ll work on it again as soon as possible
Sounds good! Feel free to come back and give us an update here when you get back to it, and we’ll resume the diagnosis where we left off.
Good luck with the Golf in the meantime!
