Hello, I have this BMW 320i. It had engine problems and the engine seized, and now it won't start. It shows me these errors. The key is the one visible in Xhorse. I ask for your help.

Hello, from what I can see in the images, you have a BMW E90 320i N46 (VIN: WBAVA76040NK63062) with the following errors:

In the CAS:
  • 00A0B4 – Car Access System (CAS), engine start, starting operation – Not currently present

In the DME:
  • 002A61 – DME, Valvetronic, adaptation – Present
  • 002F44 – DME, electronic immobilizer system – Not currently present

The key read with the Xhorse Key Tool Max Pro shows: PCF7944 (chip 46), ID: 6ACD0644, key no. 2, 157725 km, status "Learned" and "Already locked". The key itself appears to be OK.

Error analysis:

1. Error 002F44 (immobilizer in the DME) – Even though it is "Not currently present" now, if the engine seized and the DME was replaced, the DME and CAS3 need to be synchronized (ISN match). If the ISN does not match, the car will not start.

2. Error 002A61 (Valvetronic adaptation) – This one is Present, which indicates that the Valvetronic is not adapted. If the engine was replaced or rebuilt, it is necessary to perform the Valvetronic reset/adaptation via diagnostics. This error alone can prevent the engine from starting.

3. Error 00A0B4 (CAS – starting operation) – The CAS attempted to start the engine but could not; this is related to the points above.

I need to know the following to guide you better:
  • Was the engine replaced? If so, is the DME currently in the car the original one, or did it come with the new engine?
  • What is the DME part number (label on the ECU, e.g., 7 583 xxx)?
  • Do you have access to ISTA+, INPA, CGDI BMW, Yanhua ACDP, or Xhorse Key Tool Plus to read the CAS3?
  • Can you check whether the ISN of the DME and CAS3 are synchronized?

If the DME was replaced together with the engine, the process is: read the ISN from the CAS3, write that ISN to the DME (or vice versa), and ensure synchronization. Tools such as CGDI BMW, Yanhua ACDP, or Xhorse Key Tool Plus can perform CAS3↔DME alignment on the E90 N46.

OK, if the engine is the same and they only replaced the piston rings and head gasket, the DME is original and the ISN is not a problem. That simplifies things quite a bit.

The main focus is the error that is Present:

002A61 – Valvetronic, adaptation

On the N46 engine, when the head is removed, the Valvetronic motor e/ou the eccentric shaft may have been left out of position or disconnected during the work. This error alone is enough to prevent the engine from starting.

What to check:

  • Confirm that the Valvetronic motor connector is properly connected (it is common to forget it after assembly).
  • Check whether the Valvetronic eccentric shaft is mechanically in the correct position.
  • Perform the Valvetronic adaptation reset with your scanner — in the DME, look under "Special functions" or "Service" → Valvetronic → Reset/Adaptation.

The other two errors:
  • 002F44 (DME immobilizer) – "Not present"; since the DME is original, it is just an old record.
  • 00A0B4 (CAS – starting operation) – "Not present", a consequence of the previous ones.

Steps:

  • Check the Valvetronic motor connector and eccentric shaft position sensor.
  • Perform the Valvetronic reset/adaptation via diagnostics.
  • Clear all DTCs.
  • Try starting it.

If it still does not start even after the reset, also check whether you have a crankshaft sensor (CKP) signal and whether the fuel pump primes when you switch on the ignition — after a rebuild, it is common for a connector to be left unplugged.

What scanner are you using for diagnostics? It looks like a Launch X431 from the photos — confirm so I can tell you the exact path for the Valvetronic reset.

I'm using an Autel IM508S, but I also have a Thinktool Master 2.

No Autel IM508S:

  1. Vai a Diagnóstico → BMW → Selecção automática (ou selecciona manualmente E90 / 320i / N46)
  2. Entra no módulo DME (Motor)
  3. Vai a Funções especiais (ou "Service Functions")
  4. Procura por "Valvetronic" → Reset adaptação / Inicialização
  5. Segue as instruções no ecrã — normalmente pede ignição ON sem arrancar
  7. Desliga a ignição, espera 30 segundos, e tenta arrancar

Roda a chave para a posição OFF (posição 0) — ignição completamente desligada.

O procedimento normalmente segue esta sequência:

  1. O scanner pede para ligar a ignição (Borne 15 ON) → roda a chave para ON sem arrancar
  2. Ele executa parte do reset

Segue as instruções passo a passo no ecrã do Autel.
