How this tool works

This software does NOT connect via OBD. It is an offline BIN dump editor (table / bench work). The principle is as follows:

  1. You access the vehicle's instrument cluster (Kombi).
  2. You read the EEPROM from the cluster board using a programmer (for example UPA-USB, Orange5, VVDI Prog, Xprog, etc.).
  3. You obtain a .bin file (the memory dump).
  4. You open this file in the software → it displays the mileage, VIN, and short VIN.
  5. You can modify the values or click Virginize to reset the module to zero (useful when replacing an instrument cluster).
  6. You write the modified file back to the EEPROM using your programmer.
  7. You reinstall the instrument cluster and perform the codage/programmation using BMW tools (ISTA, E-Sys, etc.).

What hardware you need

  • An EEPROM programmer (UPA-USB, VVDI Prog, Orange5, Xprog, etc.)
  • The pinout diagram for your instrument cluster so you know which chip to read

Thank you very much Gemini for your ultra-fast reply :). I have a 2008 BMW E82; one morning, my instrument cluster died. I found a used E87 instrument cluster and installed it. It shows the same mileage as the old one, but I have the red dot because the VIN is not the same as my car's.

I tried programming it with ISTA/P, but the coding fails.

So I checked with INPA, and I can clearly see that the Kombi does not have the same chassis number as my car. I tried with winkfp, and I can program the kombi, or at least I think so, because as a beginner, I do not really know whether I am performing the correct procedure. On forums, people say they succeeded; maybe I am making a mistake.

Do you have a solution to my problem, Gemini? Is there something I can do via OBD, or am I obliged to get a programmer?

Which programmer should I get for a beginner like me?

118i, n43, 2007. placed a donor ecu and cas including key and everything needed to start the car. Now the car is running fine, only the dsc needs to be synced with the new donor vin. What is the best way to program the new vin?

  • Re-check with INPA that no VIN mismatch faults return

Important notes

  • Check ALL modules for VIN mismatch — not just DSC. Use INPA to do a full vehicle fault scan. Other modules like FRM, JBBF, EPS (power steering), etc. might also need recoding with the correct FA. The same NCS Expert procedure applies to each one.
  • Your Xtool D8W — it's a good general diagnostic tool but for BMW E-Series deep coding like VIN changes in individual modules, NCS Expert is far more capable. Use the Xtool for quick fault scanning if needed, but do the actual coding work in NCS Expert.
  • DCAN cable — make sure you're connecting NCS Expert via a proper K+DCAN interface (the white OBD cable from the Standard Tools setup). If you're using an ICOM emulator or a generic J2534, make sure it's configured correctly in NCS Expert.

Equipment to get:

  • EEPROM programmer — Xprog clone or VVDI Prog depending on your budget (for Kombi, FRM, CAS work, etc.)
  • K+DCAN USB cable — if you don't already have one for NCS Expert / INPA (FTDI clones work well; avoid CH340 versions, which often cause problems)
  • Adapters — at minimum, a SOIC8 clip (to read EEPROMs without desoldering); it costs just a few euros and will save you a lot of hassle
  • Soldering iron + hot-air station — not essential right away, but if you want to go further with FRM repairs and others, it's a worthwhile investment

Advice before you get started:

  • First practice on a module where it doesn't matter (a faulty FRM or Kombi, for example) before touching a working module
  • ALWAYS make a backup before every operation — that's the golden rule
