Handy utility for anyone running both Standard Tools and ISTA+ on the same machine — Ediabas path conflicts are one of the most common headaches with dual installations.

A few notes for anyone picking this up:

  • Always run as Administrator — the MKLINK symbolic link creation and system variable changes won't work without elevated privileges.
  • "Manage System Variables" only needs to run once during initial setup. It cleans up conflicting environment paths (EC-APPS, EDIABAS) so the two toolsets don't step on each other.
  • The MKLINK feature for E-Sys PSdZData requires that ISTA+'s SDP (programming data) is already installed. It creates a symbolic link so E-Sys reads directly from ISTA+'s data — saves a significant amount of disk space since you're not duplicating 50+ GB of PSdZData.
  • After toggling modes, it's a good idea to restart any open diagnostic application (INPA, NCS Expert, ISTA+) so it picks up the new environment paths cleanly.

Works with K+DCAN, ENET, and ICOM — essentially any standard BMW diagnostic interface since it's only managing the PC-side software configuration, not the hardware communication layer itself.

If anyone runs into issues after using the toggle, check your system environment variables (System Properties → Advanced → Environment Variables) to verify that EDIABAS_CONFIG_DIR and the EC-APPS path point to the correct location for the mode you selected.
