BMW MGU Store – Install Applications on BMW iDrive 7 / iDrive 8 (Complete Tutorial)#

Hello everyone!
I recently came across an interesting open-source project for BMW owners equipped with the MGU multimedia system (iDrive 7 / iDrive 8).
The project is called MGU Store. It allows you to install, update and uninstall applications directly on your BMW's multimedia head unit using GitHub repositories, web links or a USB flash drive.
Think of it as an App Store for your BMW's iDrive system, allowing you to manage additional applications and tools.
Official GitHub Repository:
https://github.com/robertnisipeanu/mgu-store
License: GPL-3.0

1. What is MGU Store?#

MGU Store is an open-source project designed for BMW multimedia systems based on the MGU architecture.
It installs several components on the head unit:
  • MGU Store: The main interface used to browse and install applications.
  • Updater: Downloads and installs requested updates.
  • Deploy Tool: Manages installations and allows rollback to previous versions.
  • App Privacy: Manages application visibility in reports sent from the head unit to BMW.
  • Renderer: Provides graphical rendering support for applications.
  • Python: Provides support for applications running directly on the head unit.
  • Internet Uplink: Allows applications to access the internet through different connection methods.

What can you do with it?#

  • Install applications from GitHub repositories.
  • Add external application sources.
  • Update installed applications.
  • Uninstall applications.
  • Install applications using a USB flash drive.
  • Manage repositories and GitHub accounts.
  • Access installation logs and troubleshoot errors.

2. Compatibility#

Multimedia SystemCompatibility
BMW MGU – iDrive 7Yes
BMW MGU – iDrive 8Software support, tested in emulator
BMW CICNo
BMW NBTNo
BMW NBT EVO / iDrive 5-6No
Important: iDrive 8 has been tested by the developer in an emulator, not on a physical vehicle. Do not consider iDrive 8 support equivalent to validation on real hardware.
Before proceeding, identify the exact multimedia unit installed in your BMW.

3. Requirements#

You will need:
  1. A BMW equipped with a compatible MGU head unit.
  2. A laptop or PC running Windows 10/11, Linux or macOS.
  3. An ENET cable for the initial SSH setup.
  4. Root SSH access and the corresponding private key.
  5. OpenSSH installed on your computer.
  6. A connection to the vehicle through ENET or Wi-Fi, depending on the installation stage.
  7. A stable power supply for the vehicle during the installation process.
I strongly recommend using an appropriate battery support unit while performing these operations.

4. Preparing the Head Unit – Enabling SSH Root Access#

This is the preliminary stage.
MGU Store requires root SSH access to install its components on the multimedia unit.
The project used for this procedure:
https://github.com/cauliflowermossgrape/idrive7-8-ssh-root
This project allows SSH access to be enabled on BMW MGU units using an ENET connection.

Before enabling SSH#

MANDATORY: BACK UP YOUR HU_MGU CODING!
The flashing operation performed by the SSH tool may erase the head unit's coding and CAFD definitions. BMW Digital Key pairings may also be deleted.
Make sure you have a backup before proceeding.

Preparation steps#

  1. Download the idrive7-8-ssh-root project from GitHub.
  2. Connect your laptop to the vehicle using an ENET cable.
  3. Put the vehicle into the required diagnostic state and keep the head unit awake.
  4. Run the application according to the developer's instructions.
  5. Enter or detect the vehicle VIN.
  6. Verify that the MGU head unit is correctly detected.
  7. Use the Flash + Enable function only after checking compatibility and confirming that your backup is available.
  8. Wait for the operation to finish and for the head unit to restart.
Once completed, the tool generates the SSH connection information and private key.
Keep the private key and connection credentials somewhere safe. They provide root-level access to your multimedia unit.
Important: The flashing operation should only be performed once per head unit. Do not reflash unnecessarily. Repair functions are available for subsequent SSH-related problems without requiring another flash.

5. Testing the SSH Connection#

After enabling SSH, we need to verify communication with the head unit.
Open Command Prompt, PowerShell or your Linux terminal.
Check whether OpenSSH is installed:
ssh -V
If the command returns OpenSSH version information, the client is installed.
Connect using the private key generated during the previous step:
ssh -i "path/to/mgu_root_key" root@MGU_IP_ADDRESS
Example:
ssh -i ~/.ssh/mgu_root_key root@172.16.222.97
The IP address must match the address provided by the SSH tool or the network connection being used. The example above is the documented default address for the vehicle hotspot, not a universal address.
If authentication succeeds, you should have terminal access to the multimedia unit.
Do not proceed with the installation until root access is working correctly.

6. Installing MGU Store on Windows#

Now we can move on to the actual installation.
The MGU Store repository provides a PowerShell installer that automatically downloads the official installation script and executes it.

Step 1 – Connect to the vehicle#

Connect your laptop to the BMW hotspot or use the ENET connection if it has been configured for SSH access.
Make sure the multimedia unit is reachable.

Step 2 – Open PowerShell#

Launch PowerShell.
Before executing the installer, it is recommended to inspect the downloaded script and verify its contents.
The official installation command is:
& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/robertnisipeanu/mgu-store/main/deploy/install.ps1))) first-install --identity $HOME\.ssh\mgu_root_key
Replace the SSH key path if your private key is stored somewhere else.

Step 3 – Complete the installation#

The installer will:
  • Detect the multimedia unit.
  • Establish an SSH connection.
  • Authenticate using your private key.
  • Transfer the required components.
  • Install MGU Store and its additional components.
  • Prepare the system for use.
At the end, the installer may ask whether you want to restart the head unit:
Restart the head unit now? [y/N]
Enter:
y
The multimedia unit will restart.
After rebooting, the MGU Store icon should appear in the vehicle's applications menu.

7. Installing MGU Store on Linux#

For Linux users, the project provides a shell-based installer.
It uses HTTPS to download the installation script and SSH to communicate with the multimedia unit.

Step 1 – Check dependencies#

Open your terminal and run:
Code:
ssh -V
curl --version

Step 2 – Install MGU Store#

The official command is:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/robertnisipeanu/mgu-store/main/deploy/install.sh | sh -s -- first-install --identity ~/.ssh/mgu_root_key
If your private key is stored elsewhere, change the --identity parameter accordingly.

Step 3 – Complete the installation#

Wait until the installation process finishes.
When prompted to restart:
Restart the head unit now? [y/N]
Confirm by entering y.
After restarting, check whether MGU Store is available in the applications menu.
Technical note: Using Linux does not mean applications are installed through direct HTTP communication with the BMW. HTTPS is used to download the installer, while the actual installation is performed through SSH.

8. Using MGU Store#

After installation, the interface is divided into four main sections.

Store#

This is where you can browse applications and tools available from your configured sources.
You can open an application's page to view its version, source and installation options.

Installed#

Displays all currently installed applications.
Available functions include:
  • Update
  • Update all
  • Remove

USB#

Allows you to install applications and updates from a USB flash drive.
This is particularly useful for vehicles without an internet connection.

Settings#

Contains the main configuration options:
  • Source management.
  • Wi-Fi connection.
  • GitHub accounts.
  • Phone access.
  • Update checks.
  • Multimedia unit restart.

9. Adding a GitHub Repository#

One of the most interesting features is the ability to add external application sources.
Procedure:
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Add source.
  3. Enter the repository name or GitHub URL.
  4. Select the version type you want to follow.
For a GitHub repository, you can select:
  • Releases
  • Tags
  • Branches
After adding the source, applications available in that repository can appear in the Store.
Be careful when adding unknown sources. Only install applications from repositories you trust.

10. Installing Applications Offline – USB#

MGU Store also supports offline installation.
For this method, Node.js 18 or newer is required.
On your computer, prepare the mgu-install.js installer from the official repository.
Command for preparing the USB drive:
node mgu-install.js usb-repo /media/USB
Replace /media/USB with the actual mount location of your USB flash drive.
The command prepares the USB drive with the latest available version of the MGU Store repository.
You can also specify additional sources:
node mgu-install.js usb-repo /media/USB github:owner/repo
After preparation:
  1. Safely eject the USB flash drive.
  2. Insert it into the vehicle's USB port.
  3. Open the USB section in MGU Store.
  4. Select the desired application.
  5. Follow the installation instructions.
For a head unit that does not have MGU Store installed yet, the documentation also provides an initial installation method from USB:
node mgu-install.js first-install --from /media/USB/mgu-repo/mgu-store --identity ~/.ssh/mgu_root_key

11. Connecting Your Phone to MGU Store#

Another useful feature is managing the Store through your smartphone.
Procedure:
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Navigate to Phone access.
  3. Enable On.
  4. Scan the displayed QR code.
  5. Open the administration page on your phone.
From there, you can access:
  • Configured sources.
  • Available applications.
  • Installed applications.
  • Errors.
  • Installation logs.
  • GitHub accounts and sources.
I recommend disabling phone access once you have finished managing the Store.

12. Connecting the Multimedia Unit to the Internet#

MGU Store supports several internet connection methods:
  • Wi-Fi / smartphone hotspot.
  • USB Ethernet adapter.
  • USB LTE modem.
  • Android USB tethering.
  • iPhone Personal Hotspot via USB.
After a successful connection, the Store should display the Online status.
Please note that some Wi-Fi configurations, particularly WPA3-only networks on certain iDrive 7 units with Broadcom wireless hardware, may not be supported.

13. Common Problems and Troubleshooting#

MGU Store does not appear after installation
  • Check whether the installer completed without errors.
  • Make sure the head unit was restarted.
  • Check the installer logs.
SSH connection fails
  • Check your ENET or Wi-Fi connection.
