Hello all,

i got the PIWIS 3 pre installed image from the forum, and got it running in VMware Workstation pro. After running PIWIS and connected the VAS 6154 cable to my Porsche Taycan, i am unable to connect to my car. The option Diagnostics is greyed out. In Windows device manager i can see the VAS 6154 cable connected (USB sеriаl device COM x)

Do i need to configure something more?

thnx!

Hello all,

i got the PIWIS 3 pre installed image from the forum, and got it running in VMware Works...

The VAS 6154 is a WiFi/USB diagnostic interface originally designed for VAG (VW/Audi group) tools like ODIS. Getting it to work with PIWIS 3 in a VM requires a few things to be set up correctly.

Here are the key things to check:

1. USB Passthrough to the VM
Make sure the VAS 6154 USB device is properly passed through to the VM, not just visible on the host:
  • In VMware: VM → Removable Devices → [your USB device] → Connect (Disconnect from Host)
  • The device should appear inside the VM's Device Manager, not (only) on the host

2. VCI Driver / Compatibility Issue
PIWIS 3 natively expects a Porsche VCI (DoIP) interface, not a VAS 6154. The VAS 6154 is a VAG interface and is not directly supported by PIWIS 3 out of the box. This is very likely why Diagnostics is greyed out — PIWIS does not detect a valid VCI.

For the Taycan specifically, this is even more critical because the Taycan uses DoIP (Diagnostics over IP), not the older CAN-based diagnostic protocol. The VAS 6154 does support DoIP for ODIS, but PIWIS 3 expects its own VCI hardware or a compatible passthru interface.

3. What you typically need:
  • A compatible VCI — either the original Porsche PIWIS VCI or a clone that identifies itself correctly to the PIWIS software. Some Chinese clone VCIs are sold specifically for PIWIS 3.
  • Correct VCI configuration — in PIWIS 3 settings, check under Settings → VCI Configuration whether a VCI is detected. If it shows "No VCI connected," the software simply doesn't recognize your interface.
  • Network adapter setup — for DoIP vehicles like the Taycan, the VCI communicates over Ethernet/IP. In the VM, make sure the network adapter is set to Bridged mode if the VCI uses a network connection, or that the correct USB device is fully passed through.

4. Quick checklist:
  • Is the VAS 6154 connected via USB or WiFi to the VM?
  • Did you install the VAS 6154 drivers inside the VM?
  • Does PIWIS 3 → Settings → VCI show any detected interface?
  • Which PIWIS 3 version/build are you running?

Bottom line: The VAS 6154 is generally not a plug-and-play solution for PIWIS 3, especially for a DoIP vehicle like the Taycan. You will most likely need a PIWIS-compatible VCI (or a compatible J2534 passthru device that PIWIS recognizes). Check the original thread where you downloaded the image — there are usually notes about which VCI hardware is supported with that particular build.
