It is not that the 3.5 bar sensor itself is risky—in fact, it is safer if you are running very high boost—but there are likely practical reasons why it is not included in this specific file set:

  • Boost Limits: This Stage 2 tune targets ~421hp. On an N54, this is typically achieved with boost levels around 17–19 psi. The stock 2.5 bar TMAP sensor can read up to approximately 21.5 psi (1.5 bar boost). Since the target boost is within the range of the stock sensor, the upgrade is not strictly necessary.
  • Plug-and-Play: The 3.5 bar sensor (usually the N20 sensor) requires a physical adapter harness and hardware installation. Most standard "Stage 2" files are designed for the stock sensor setup to ensure ease of use for the majority of owners.
  • Calibration Mismatch: The real risk comes from mixing hardware. If you install a 3.5 bar sensor but use a file calibrated for the stock 2.5 bar sensor (like these appear to be), the ECU will misread the boost pressure. This will cause the car to run poorly, throw codes, or potentially run dangerously lean.

Technically, the engine (N54B30) is the same, but you cannot simply assume it will work. You must verify the ECU Hardware and Software Version of your 335i first.

Here is why you need to be careful:

  • ECU Type: This file is for MSD81. Many earlier 335i models (2006–2008) came with the MSD80 ECU. If your 335i has MSD80, this file is completely incompatible.
  • Software Version: The file is based on SW version IFN3S (related to the IJE0S ROM family). Even if you have an MSD81 ECU, your software version might be different (e.g., I8A0S).

Recommendation:
Read your 335i ECU ID first. If the HW and SW numbers do not match 0044CC0IJE0SIFN3S exactly, do not flash this file. Flashing a file with mismatched software versions can brick the ECU or cause the car not to start.
