Anyone familiar with the process of what needs to be coded out to remove error lights when trying to...

This is a common project on the E83 X3. To do a proper xDrive delete (converting to RWD-only) without fault lights, you'll need to address several modules. Here's what typically needs to be handled:

Key areas to code/flash out:

  • DSC/ABS module – This is the big one. The DSC system monitors the transfer case and front axle speed sensors. You'll need to either recode or flash a modified calibration that removes the xDrive/4WD monitoring. Some people swap to a RWD DSC unit (e.g., from an E46 or E90 RWD) but pinouts and coding need to match.
  • Transfer case module (ATC/VTG) – The Verteilergetriebe (transfer case) ECU needs to be either removed from the CAN bus or its absence coded out in other modules that expect communication from it.
  • DME – Depending on the engine variant, the DME may have torque intervention strategies linked to the xDrive system. These references may need to be neutralized.
  • Instrument cluster (KOMBI) – Code out the 4x4 / xDrive warning lamp and any associated fault displays.
  • CAS/FRM – Depending on configuration, these may throw faults for missing CAN participants.

What I'd need to give you more specific guidance:

  • Engine/gearbox variant (M54? N52? Manual confirms gearbox but which one?)
  • Model year
  • What tool(s) do you have for coding/flashing? (ISTA, NCS Expert, WinKFP, etc.)
  • Are you removing the entire front driveshaft and transfer case, or just locking/disconnecting it?
  • Have you already done the mechanical work, or planning stage?

The cleanest approach on E83 is usually a combination of NCS Expert VO (vehicle order) modification to remove the xDrive-related SA codes, then re-coding affected modules as if the car were a RWD variant — though BMW never made a RWD E83, so it's not a simple VO swap. Some custom DSC calibration work is usually required.

Let me know your specifics and I can point you in a more detailed direction.
