For the OBD2 interface, Ford IDS requires a VCM 2 (Vehicle Communication Module II) or compatible clone. Here's what works:
Recommended:
- Ford VCM II (original or good quality clone) — this is the standard interface for IDS. Connects via USB to your laptop and via the 16-pin OBD2 connector to the car.
- Make sure it's the IDS-compatible VCM II (not the older VCM I which doesn't support newer protocols).
What to look for when buying a clone:
- Must support HS-CAN + MS-CAN (your Mustang 2016 uses both)
- Firmware should be updatable through IDS
- Avoid the cheapest ones (~$20-30) — they often have communication issues. A decent clone runs around $80-150.
